Launching a new feature in Vault to help you copy your holds from Mail to Hangouts Chat. Mail retention rules and holds will stop protecting chat messages in classic Hangouts. Instead, Hangouts Chat retention rules and holds will protect chat messages in both classic Hangouts and Chat.

Google Vault has introduced support for Hangouts Chat, providing G Suite admins with essential governance controls. Admins can now set default and custom retention policies for direct messages and room conversations, place legal holds to preserve data regardless of user deletion, and search, preview, and export chat content to meet legal and compliance obligations.

Google Vault is introducing several improvements to its holds system to help organizations better meet legal and preservation obligations. Key updates include the ability to create and manage holds for specific organizational units (OUs), a change in logic so that holds with no specified users apply to no one (rather than everyone), and an updated user interface for a more intuitive experience.

Google Vault updates how admins set new retention rules.

Google Vault is changing the way admins configure new retention rules. Admins will now be prompted to choose between two options: expunging messages only if they were deleted during the coverage period (the default) or expunging messages even if they are still present in a user's mailbox. This change does not affect existing retention settings, which will continue to operate under their original configurations.

Google Apps Vault now supports retention and eDiscovery for Hangouts chat history.

Google Apps Vault has been extended to support Hangouts chat history, enabling organizations to retain, archive, search, and export user chat data for compliance and eDiscovery needs. For customers already using Vault, full chat retention for all messages will activate automatically once the admin forces chat history on using the new Hangouts policy settings.
